Resources for Reflection

The following links serve helpful resources for individual or team reflection and ongoing formation:

Spirituality of Administration

Ann Garrido, “More than a desk job,” America Magazine 2009:  http://americamagazine.org/issue/702/article/more-desk-job

This short and highly acclaimed article serves as a basis for individual reflection or team conversation.

For discussion or reflection:  What aspects of Garrido’s reflection most speak to you?  When have you in your administrative work responded to the following:

  • A call to greatness of vision?
  • a call to love blindly?
  • a call to courage?
  • a call to embrace death?

The Power of Vulnerability

Brene Brown’s 18 minute TED Talk: The power of vulnerability http://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability.html

Henri Nouwen: The Fruits born in  vulnerability

There is a great difference between successfulness and fruitfulness. Success comes from strength, control, and respectability. A successful person has the energy to create something, to keep control over its development, and to make it available in large quantities. Success brings many rewards and often fame.   Fruits, however, come from weakness and vulnerability. And fruits are unique. A child is the fruit conceived in vulnerability, community is the fruit born through shared brokenness, and intimacy is the fruit that grows through touching one another’s wounds. Let’s remind one another that what brings us true joy is not successfulness but fruitfulness.

For discussion or reflection:  Consider a couple of “snapshots” from your work as a leader in your organization. What are some of your successes as a leader that others would laud? What are some of your fruits that may be less obvious?

(For teams) When in your shared leadership have you know experienced fruits that emerge from vulnerable places?
